Jagaddhatri Puja in West Bengal

Jagaddhatri puja is very special for all the Bengalees. Ma Jagaddhatri is another form of Ma Aadi Shakti, She is worshipped in West Bengal on Navami tithi of Shukla paksha of Kartik month.

In Kolkata, it is mostly celebrated on the Navami day. But in Chandannagar and in Krishnanagar (of Nadia district), Jagaddhatri puja is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur. They celebrate the puja for four or five days, from the Shashti tithi to Dashami tithi. Wonderful pandals and beautiful lightings are the main reason people visit Chandannagar and Krishnanagar during this time. In both these places, the deities of different pandals/ localities are named separately and they have unique characteristics.

I also have a memory of visiting Krishnanagar during Jagaddhatri puja once during my school days. I visited many pandals and witnessed many forms of Ma Jagaddhatri there. The deity 'Buri Ma' of Chashapara was the best among them, as far as I can remember. It was very surprising for me to witness such a huge idol with so many golden ornaments. I was in awe seeing that form of the Devi. The enthusiasm in general people regarding Ma Jagaddhatri can be felt by everyone present there.

These days there are vloggers who visit the pandals and share their experiences in social media. Through that, we all can enjoy the spirit of the puja. And also many puja committees have their own youtube or facebook channel where they share live happenings from the puja pandal. Thus the devotees who are not present there, also get the divya darshan of the deity.

On Jagaddhatri Puja day of 2025, we watched the videos of youtuber Neil (who has a channel named 'Wish Bucket' on YouTube), regarding Jagaddhatri puja in Krishnanagar. We enjoyed those moments through the video and the narration.

May the blessings of Ma Jagaddhatri bestow upon all of us.
